After more than twenty years of veterinary practice, I have noticed a growing demand for natural solutions for deworming dogs. Every week worried owners consult me with their four-legged companions, looking for alternatives to chemical treatments. I particularly remember Baloo, an Australian Shepherd whose owner was reluctant to take conventional medications. We have therefore developed a natural protocol that has proven to be very effective! 🐾 Today I share with you these precious alternatives to preserve your dog’s intestinal health.
Quick summary:
Natural dewormers offer effective alternatives to conventional chemical treatments for dogs.
- Diatomaceous earth it acts as a powerful pesticide and promotes digestion, with a dosage appropriate to the weight of the animal.
- THE pumpkin seeds they effectively fight tapeworms thanks to cucurbitacin which immobilizes intestinal parasites.
- Garlic, used with precautioncontains allicin with vermifuge properties, but remains contraindicated for puppies.
- Apple cider vinegar and carrots create an intestinal environment hostile to parasites while strengthening immunity.
Why deworm your dog?
Intestinal parasites represent a constant threat to our canine friends. Every spring these unwanted agents return in force and can cause serious health problems. Intestinal worms are divided into two large families : Roundworms (roundworms) such as roundworms and hookworms, and flatworms (tapeworms) such as tapeworms.
Your dog generally becomes infected by ingesting larvae present in the environment. Once inside the body, these parasites cling to the intestinal walls and feed on the nutrients intended for your pet. 🦠 Young puppies are particularly vulnerable to these infestations, but adult dogs are not spared..
Parasitic infestation manifests itself with various symptoms such as:
- Digestive problems (diarrhea, constipation, vomiting)
- Weight loss despite a normal appetite
- Abdominal swelling
- A general state of despondency
- A bit boring and in very poor condition
Regardless of the discomfort for your pet, Some canine parasites can be transmitted to humansespecially to children. This zoonosis poses a significant health risk to your family.
The recommended frequency for deworming varies depending on the age and situation of the dog:
| Age/Situation | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Puppies up to 2 months | Every 15 days |
| Puppies from 2 to 6 months | Once a month |
| Adult dogs | 4 times a year (every 3 months) |
| Homes with vulnerable people | Monthly |
| After mating/birthing | Monthly |
How to deworm your dog naturally?
During my years of practice I have been able to observe the effectiveness of some natural remedies. Just last month I recommended a client use pumpkin seeds for his golden retriever who was prone to recurring infestations. The results were remarkable! 🌱 Here are the natural alternatives that I regularly recommend.
Diatomaceous earth It is a powerful pesticide composed of microorganisms that irritate worms. Rich in silica and trace elements, it also aids digestion. Use only edible white diatomaceous earth at this dosage:
1. For a dog up to 5 kg: 1 teaspoon per day
2. For a dog weighing 5-10 kg: 2 teaspoons per day
3. For a dog weighing between 10 and 25 kg: 1 tablespoon per day
4. For a dog weighing between 25 and 50 kg: 2 tablespoons per day
Pumpkin seeds represent an effective solution, especially against tapeworms. Their cucurbitacin immobilizes intestinal worms while strengthening your pet’s immune system. Dose based on weight: 1 teaspoon per 4 kg of body weight, twice a day. Remember to grind the seeds shortly before use to preserve their active ingredients. 🎃
Garlic, used with care, can be a natural dewormer due to its active compound, allicin. Chop a fresh garlic clove and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This treatment can be followed for 4 days, 2-3 times a year. Be careful though: garlic can be toxic in high doses and is contraindicated for puppies under 6 months of age.
Apple cider vinegar makes the intestinal environment inhospitable to parasites. Administer one spoonful mixed with food once a day for a week. Carrots, rich in vitamins A and C, strengthen the immune system and help mechanically remove parasites during digestion. 🥕

Advantages and disadvantages of natural dewormer for dogs
Being a veterinarian, I have to objectively present the advantages and limitations of natural solutions. Natural dewormers offer several significant benefits for your partner:
They generally represent a lower cost than traditional chemical treatments. For dogs with contraindications to traditional dewormers, these alternatives can be life-saving. 💰 Natural solutions generally cause fewer side effects and better respect the balance of the canine body.
On the other hand, these methods also have some limitations:
- Their action is often slower than conventional drug treatment
- Their effectiveness may decrease in the event of significant parasitic infestation
- The precise dosage is sometimes difficult to determine
- Some ingredients like garlic can be toxic if used incorrectly.
I always advise my clients to consult before starting a natural treatment. A stool test can determine the exact type of parasite and direct you towards the most suitable solution. 🔬 During serious infestations, initial pharmacological treatment followed by natural prevention is often the best approach.
How to recognize an infestation in dogs?
Spotting the signs of a pest infestation quickly will allow you to take action before the situation gets worse. Symptoms suggestive of the presence of intestinal worms in your dog include several visible manifestations.
Look carefully at your pet’s feces. The presence of frequent diarrhea, sometimes mixed with blood, or “white vermicelli” is a telltale sign. If your dog frequently licks his anus or drags himself on the ground, this could indicate discomfort caused by parasites. 🔍
Vomiting that sometimes contains worms, unexplained weight loss despite a normal appetite, or an excessively bloated stomach should alert you. Signs of anemia such as excessive tiredness or pale gums it may also indicate significant parasitic infestation, particularly blood-sucking hookworms.
If you observe many of these symptoms, do not hesitate to consult. A simple stool test will confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment. If in doubt, remember that preventive advice is better than emergency treatment! 🏥
