After years spent in veterinary clinics, I have had the opportunity to visit numerous of them Maine Coons and Norwegians 🐾. These two giants with sumptuous coats continue to delight families looking to adopt an exceptional companion. But how to choose between these two breeds with such particular characteristics?
Quick summary:
Maine Coons et Norwegian : two giants with sumptuous cloaks but distinct characteristics.
- Origins: The Norwegian descends from the cats of Vikingsthe Maine Coon of the felines brought by the European sailors in America
- Physicist: Maine Coon plus massive (6-12kg) with square head, more compact Norwegian (4-8kg) with triangular head
- Temperament: Norwegian independent and attached to a person, Maine Coon more sociable and player
- Interview : Norwegian with fur autonettoyant (weekly brushing), requires the Maine Coon 2-3 brosses per week
Origins and history: two Nordic felines with distinct pasts
THE Norwegian forest catalso called Skogkatt, it has a fascinating history linked to the Vikings. These intrepid navigators brought these cats on their ships several centuries ago! 🛡️ These cats initially lived in the wild before becoming popular farm companions. Official recognition of this ancient breed dates back to 1897, then was confirmed in 1976.
THE American Maine Coon It has different but equally captivating origins. Appearing in the 19th century in the state of Maine, it probably descends from long-haired cats brought by European sailors. These cats have developed their characteristic dense fur to survive harsh winters of the American northeast.
In my practice, I see that these distinct origins still influence the temperament of these breeds today. The Norwegian keeps it independent instinct inherited from its wild ancestors, while the Maine Coon retains this sociability developed through contact with American families.
Physical characteristics: how to differentiate a Maine Coon from a Norwegian?
| Criteria | Maine Coons | Norwegian cat |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | from 6 to 12kg | From 4 to 8 kg |
| Height at withers | 38-45 cm | 35-45 cm |
| Head shape | Square and massive | Triangular and oval |
| Coat | Silky texture and medium length | Thick, self-cleaning double pile |
During my consultations I easily notice these morphological differences. THE Maine Coons impresses with his more massive silhouette and can measure up to one meter in length! Its very smooth and soft coat requires regular maintenance. His eyes, smaller and spaced apart, give him that characteristic severe expression. 😺
THE Norwegian cat has the particularity of triangular head and his eyes large, round and expressive. Its particular coat, with this woolly undercoat, has this property self-netting exceptional. This double waterproof fur proves its adaptation to northern climate conditions. More robust and athletic, it remains slightly more compact than its American cousin.

Behavior and Temperament: Which Personality Suits You Best?
My long experience has taught me that these two breeds have distinct personalities. THE Norwegian cat often develops a privileged attachment with only one person in the family, while remaining adorable with the other members. His remarkable intelligence allows him to learn a few words and respect them! 🧠
This Nordic feline keeps a strong hunting instinct and particularly loves going up to high altitude to observe the environment. More reserved with strangers, he tolerates solitude better than the Maine Coon. Its strong and dynamic character makes it an ideal companion for active families.
THE Maine Coons it shows more sociable and participatory in the life of the house. His playful side persists well into adulthood, which delights children! Some individuals even like water, a rare trait among our feline companions. Despite his stern appearance, this American giant remains very gentle and affectionate towards his humans.
Here are the main behavioral differences I observe:
- Independence : the Norwegian surpasses the Maine Coon
- Sociability : The Maine Coon excels in this area
- Adaptation : Both breeds adapt perfectly to apartment life
- Intelligence : equivalent level but different expressions
Maintenance and health: which requires more care?
In terms of maintenance, these two breeds have different needs. THE Norwegian cat benefits from it self-cleaning coat which greatly facilitates maintenance. A weekly brushing is usually sufficient, although an extra brush is always appreciated! ✨
THE Maine Coons requires more attention with brushing needed at least 2 or 3 times a week. Without this regular maintenance, tangles will quickly form in his silky fur. I also had to do a few full shaves during consultations where the owners had overlooked this point.
When it comes to health, the two breeds share some predispositions. There hypertrophic cardiomyopathyHip dysplasia and urinary stones require regular veterinary monitoring. Life expectancy varies between 12 and 16 years for both breeds.
Norwegian presents a specific risk with type IV glycogen storage diseasea rare but fatal genetic disease. The Maine Coon seems more exposed to inbreeding problems in some breeders, hence the importance of choosing a serious breeder.
For preventive medicine I systematically recommend vaccination against feline panleukopenia, coryza, leukosis and rabies. Regular deworming and preventive dental care complete this essential health monitoring program.
