September 15th is Gotcha Day, a celebration of adoption made in the USA.

At the beginning the concept of adoption was linked exclusively to the human side, in fact Gotcha Day was also used as a birthday for the adopted child without knowing the actual day of birth. Or it is used as a second birthday, celebrating the day of adoption as a real anniversary.

Today, after many years, Gotcha Day is not only dedicated to human adoptions but also to our beloved four-legged friends adopted from shelters and breeders around the world.

It goes without saying that the purpose of this international day is to raise awareness of the importance of both human and animal adoption.

It is estimated that the number of stray dogs in the world, out of a population of 900 million inhabitants, is around 200 million. In Italy, one of the G8 countries, it is estimated in 2019 that the number of stray dogs is around 700 thousand specimens against 40 thousand adoptions per year.

It is clear that the problem is far from being solved, especially in Southern Italy, which in some regions hosts a large part of the Italian stray population.

The issue of stray cats is even more disconcerting since not even a census has ever been carried out to understand the numbers of the problem. The only certain data is the truly negligible number of farms in Italy, we are talking about around 96 in 2020 across the entire national territory compared to over 1200 farms.

Only by reading these few numbers can we understand the gravity of the stray dog ​​situation both in Italy and around the world.

Then Gotcha Day becomes fundamental to raise awareness among the population about the problem of stray animals and the wonderful solution of adoption.

Ferdy the cat and his extended family

The cat has one of its main certainties territory . After separation from the mother, which occurs between the seventh and ninth weeks of life, an attachment to the territory develops. This also happened to Ferdy, a small provincial kitten who found himself without a mother and without siblings, familiarizing himself with a common space in a building on the outskirts of Rome.

And so, every tenant of that building adopted this beautiful kitten. One day the couple on the third floor, another the boy who works as a delivery boy to make ends meet. Another is the grandmother on the first floor who feels alone and would like someone to cuddle, another is the family in the attic, because one more mouth to feed doesn’t make a difference.

Story of the «sciura» Marisa

Mother and puppies abandoned in a forest in the Marche, alive thanks to a animal protection volunteer who happened to pass through that area. After the mother was treated, the puppies managed to survive for the first month and grow enough to be adopted.

While the mother remained with the volunteers in the Marche, Mallorca and Minorca, the two little sisters were transferred to the Aquila Project Center in San Giuliano Milanese in the hope that, in Lombardy (a region notoriously fond of dogs and adoptions) they could easily find a home.

In fact, Mallorca was already awaited by her new father and mother and she didn’t have time to settle into the gardens of the Aquila project when she went to Milan to get to know her new home and her new life… with the name of Marisa!!! In a short time she became a full-fledged Milanese citizen, between walks in the centre, aperitifs and splendid days in the park, today she is known by all her friends as Siura Marisa !
